In-clinic whitening for a brighter, even smile.
Whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth using a peroxide gel, which breaks down the stains held within the enamel. It is a change of shade, not a coating, and it is done either in the clinic or with custom trays you wear at home.
Before anything else
Teeth are only whitened once they are healthy. Decay, an untreated cavity, or inflamed gums must be dealt with first, because gel on an exposed or decayed surface hurts and does not work. We check first and will say if something needs doing before we start.
Something worth knowing early
Whitening lightens natural tooth only. Crowns, veneers, bridges and white fillings do not change colour. If you have a crown or a filling on a front tooth, it will stay the shade it is while the teeth around it lighten - so that restoration may need replacing afterwards to match. We will point out which of your teeth this applies to before you decide.
In clinic or at home
In clinic uses a stronger gel with your gums protected, and takes about an hour. At home uses trays made from an impression of your teeth, worn for a set time daily over one to two weeks; it is more gradual, and the trays can be reused later for a top-up. Both reach a similar result.
What to expect
Sensitivity to cold during and for a day or two afterwards is the most common effect, and it settles. A desensitising toothpaste in the weeks beforehand reduces it.
How long it lasts
Usually one to two years, depending on how much tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco you take. Avoid strongly staining food and drink for the first forty-eight hours, while the enamel is most absorbent.
How light it goes varies by person, and we will give you an honest estimate from your starting shade rather than a promise of a particular result.
