When teeth are missing, a denture or a fixed prosthesis restores chewing, speech and appearance. Which one suits you depends on how many teeth are gone, the state of those remaining, and the bone underneath - so this starts with an examination and an X-ray rather than a price list.
Complete dentures
For a jaw with no remaining teeth. Made over several visits: impressions, a trial fitting you can see and comment on before anything is finalised, then the finished set. Getting the bite and the lip support right matters more than speed, which is why the stages exist.
Partial dentures
For some teeth missing. They clasp onto the remaining teeth. A metal-framework partial is slimmer, stronger and more comfortable than an all-acrylic one, and it spreads the load onto the teeth rather than the gum.
Fixed bridges
Where there are sound teeth either side of a gap, a bridge fills it with something that does not come out. The supporting teeth must be prepared, which means removing some healthy tooth structure - a real trade-off, and one we will discuss against an implant, which does not touch the neighbours.
Implant-supported options
An implant-retained denture clips onto implants and stops the lower denture moving, which is the complaint people most often have about a full lower plate.
Settling in
A new denture feels bulky, speech takes a week or two to adjust, and sore spots are normal at first - those are adjusted at review appointments, so keep them. Start with soft food cut small, and chew on both sides.
Care
Clean the denture daily out of the mouth, and leave it out overnight so the gums recover. Gums and bone change shape over the years, so a denture that fitted well will eventually need relining or remaking - that is expected, not a failure.
