Titanium implants to replace a missing tooth, placed and restored in-clinic.
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a titanium post that is placed into the jawbone. Over the following months the bone grows against the post and holds it firmly, and a crown is then fitted on top. The result looks and is used like an ordinary tooth, and it does not rely on the teeth on either side for support the way a bridge does.
Who it suits
Anyone missing one or more teeth who has enough healthy bone to hold the post. We take an X-ray before deciding, because the amount and quality of bone is what determines whether an implant is the right choice. Where bone has been lost, a graft may be needed first, and we will tell you that before you commit to treatment rather than during it. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and some medicines affect healing, so tell us about your medical history at the first visit.
What the appointment involves
Placement is done under local anaesthetic. You are awake, and the area is fully numb. Most single implants take about an hour. Afterwards you can eat and drink normally once the numbness wears off, keeping to the other side for the first day or two.
Afterwards
Expect mild soreness and some swelling for two to three days, which ordinary painkillers manage. Healing before the crown is fitted usually takes three to six months, and a temporary tooth can be worn in the meantime so there is no visible gap.
Looking after it
An implant cannot decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up, which is the main reason implants fail years later. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between the teeth, and a check-up and clean every six months are what keep it sound.
