Tooth-coloured fillings that restore a decayed tooth and match it.
A filling repairs a tooth where decay has broken through the enamel, restoring its shape so you can chew on it normally and sealing it so the decay cannot continue. Caught early, a filling is a short, straightforward appointment - the same cavity left for a year may need a root canal instead.
Composite, not amalgam
We use tooth-coloured composite, which bonds to the tooth and is matched to its shade. It is not the silver amalgam many people remember; it keeps the tooth looking normal and requires less healthy tooth to be removed, because it bonds in place rather than needing an undercut to grip.
What the appointment involves
Local anaesthetic if the cavity is deep or near the nerve; a small, shallow cavity often needs none. The decay is removed, the cavity cleaned, the composite placed in layers and set with a light, then shaped and polished so it meets the opposing tooth correctly. One filling usually takes twenty to forty minutes.
Afterwards
You can eat as soon as any numbness wears off - composite is fully set before you leave. Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal, particularly on a deep filling. If the tooth feels high when you bite, or sensitivity is getting worse rather than better after a week, come back so we can check it - an adjustment takes minutes.
When a filling is not enough
If decay has undermined a large part of the tooth, a filling will not hold and an inlay or a crown is the sounder choice. If the decay has reached the nerve, a root canal is needed first. We will tell you which of these you are looking at before starting, not partway through.
Fillings do not last forever. Most give many years; they are checked at each routine visit for wear or a leaking margin, which is far cheaper to catch than to repair.
