Bliss 32 Dental & Implant Centre
Gentle care for young patients, from first visit to sealants.
Children's dentistry is about two things: treating what needs treating, and making sure a child does not grow up frightened of the dentist. The second one shapes how we do the first.
The first visit
Bring a child by their first birthday, or when the first teeth appear. That visit is short and mostly about looking, counting teeth and letting them sit in the chair - so that the first time something actually needs doing, the place is already familiar.
Milk teeth matter
A common belief is that baby teeth do not need treating because they fall out anyway. They hold the space for the adult teeth behind them, and a milk tooth lost early lets the others drift, which crowds the permanent tooth that was meant to come through there. Decay in a milk tooth also hurts, and causes missed school and disturbed nights.
What we offer
Check-ups and cleaning; fluoride application to strengthen enamel; fissure sealants, a thin protective coating over the grooves of the back teeth where decay usually starts; fillings; and space maintainers when a milk tooth has been lost too early.
How we handle a nervous child
Explaining in plain words what will happen, showing instruments before using them, and stopping when a child asks. Nothing is forced through. For a very anxious child or a long procedure we will discuss the options with you rather than pressing on.
What parents can do
Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, supervising until about age seven or eight - young children cannot clean their own back teeth properly, however willing they are. Keep sugar to mealtimes rather than grazing across the day; how often sugar is taken matters more than how much.
And please avoid saying "it won't hurt" in the waiting room. It plants the idea. "We're going to count your teeth" works far better.
